In its very early days, the only function that a mobile phone could offer its user is exactly what its name suggests - as a telephone unit that can be used whenever a wireless signal is available.  Having a mobile phone dispenses the need to look for an available working payphone.  Moreover, it ensures that the user can be contacted whenever it is needed and wherever he may be, as long as he is located in a place where a wireless signal is available.

Of course, that was then.  Today, a mobile phone can have many functions aside from being basically a portable telephone.  Thanks to continued developments in technology, the mobile phone can now work not just as a portable communications device, with voice and text functions.  A mobile phone can also work as a portable entertainment system where you can listen to music, watch video and play games.  Cameras built into mobile phones enable users to take snapshots and videos almost instantaneously.  Many mobile phone units also work as portable organizers and time management tools, with built-in calendars, to-do lists and address books.  Many mobile units also function as pocket computers, allowing their users to make use of word processors, spreadsheets, emailing software and other applications, thereby getting some work done even while away from their desktops or laptops.
